The Kabuki Make-up Represented by using Animatronics and 3D CG

by admin on Feb.02, 2010, under Video

Conservation and renovation of ever-changing traditional objects, buildings, and culture are important issues. Thus studies on digital archives of those subjects are widely conducted nowadays in Japanese traditional performing arts and especially abuki. This form of art has been contriving and changing its style according to the shifts in stage sets, lighting, and stage form. Some parts of Kabuki production have been through significant changes, along with the long perpetuated parts. Kabuki is still developing day by day, and the most recent change is evident on a UPER kabukistage. All Kabuki actors are male so they have devised and improved their makeup, which has been playing a major role in the direction of Kabuki. Distinctive makeup, epitomized by umadori has been developed by actors according to the stage light shifts and form. This paper proposes methods to build-up Kabuki make-up archives. The main goals of the archives are to record, exhibit, and express the Kabuki make-up of the past, these goals will be achieved by exploring the proper techniques utilized. Data about Kabuki make-up, including cosmetics, materials and techniques, are collected in a historical perspective background, culture, manners and customs. Vital components to establish the archives of the Kabuki make-up are specified as well as the archiving methodology, face replicas and 3D CG selection. The archives of Kabuki make-up are made with consideration of data-exchange of both replicas and 3D CG. ————————————————- www.ainst.org
